Martial Arts:

Began 1974 during the transition under, Tola Etheridge Lewis, Jr., aka "Toby" Lewis of the Elizabeth City School of Karate. This was a period where Soke, Shogo Kuniba of Seishin-Kai Martial Arts and Richard P. Baillargeon, then U. S. Seishi-Kai Representation were at odds regarding association or organization financial obligations (so the story goes) and Soke fired Baillargeon.

It was at this point that the National Karate Jiu Jitsu Union (NKJU) was created by the late Richard P. Baillargeon, aka Mr. B., and although not a Soke, was referred to as Soke B. or Soke Baillargeon.

Sensei Lewis, now Hanshi, remained my instructor in Motobu-Ha Shito-Ryu Karate-Do for the next 17 years, until May 1991. I achieved the ranks jukyu to yondan while under his instruction. It was also during this period where I joined the United States Navy as a medical professional from basic hospital to advanced hospital submarine corpsman (1983 to 2003). In May 1991 I was cross-ranked to yondan by Kuniba Soke.

In 1997, my military duties took me and my wife to Yokosuka, Japan for the next seven years.

Shortly after arriving I began teaching Motobu-Ha Shito-Ryu Karate-Do at Yokosuka Naval Base but I wanted to teach in the Japanese community. Before doing so I had to seek permission and receive a license from the head of Seishin-Kai, Kunio Tatsuno, Soke, as Soke Kuniba had passed in 1992.

In April 1999, Tatsuno Soke (now deceased), required that I attend a training event in Osaka, Japan. It was at this event that I, unknowingly, was being observed for godan. During the end of the day several yudansha was called forward to perform kata and to demonstrate knowledge of bunkai. Note: Before attending the event in Osaka, Masuaki Minamide, then Shihan and now also deceased, made several trips to Yokosuka to provide instruction, and to refine my kata and bunkai. When all was said and done, I was promoted to godan.

Since all of my sensei had passed away, in order for me to advance in my Budo career I sought out other sensei to train under or represent.

In 1999, I was asked by the now, Kyoshi Bill Woodard of the National Karate Kobudo Federation (NKKF) to represent his organization as his Vice-President and International Director. It was later that year than Kyoshi Woodard awarded me the title of Renshi. In 2001, Kyoshi promoted me to rokudan in Motobu-Ha Shito-Ryu Karate-Do.
It was also during this time that I was representing Hanshi Hugh Kelley of United Martial Arts Association International (UMAAI) as his Assistant Director, Assistant Chief Instructor, High Dan Board Vice-President and Motobu-Ha Shito-Ryu Shihan.

Eventually, I resigned on friendly terms with NKKF to fully commit myself to UMAAI. I learned at that time that one could not effectively serve two organizations at the same time.

In 1992, Hanshi Kelley advanced me to nanadan in Motobu-Ha Shito-Ryu Karate-Do with the title of Shihan in 2004.

I cannot recall the exact year but it was late 2004 or 2005 that I resigned from UMAAI due to a disagreement with Hanshi Kelley.

March 12, 2016: Assumed the role as 3rd Director (Kaicho) of the National Karate Jujitsu Union from Hanshi Tola E. Lewis, Jr.
